European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
